  • FoCo Fondo offers three gendered categories: men, women, and non-binary/gender expansive, which are pulled from your BikeReg profile gender selection.

We request that athletes who wish to compete for men's or women's podiums observe the framework for "Group A" athletes from the IOC/USA Cycling framework for national events. We do not require that athletes provide any information to IOC/USAC in order to qualify, instead we trust that you are able to determine your category based on your private conversations with your doctor. Those who are not competing for the podium (either overall or age-group) are welcome to race in the category that aligns with their gender irrelevant of the framework. Because racing categories will be filtered by gender provided by your BikeReg profile, if you would like to compete in a different category than your gender marker in BikeReg, please email Whitney at whitney@bikesportsco.com well ahead of event day so we can make that edit for race day with the timing company.

We value riders of all genders at FoCo Fondo and acknowledge that the gender framework presented by the IOC/USA Cycling is imperfect. We offer equal prize purses and acknowledgement across all three categories at FoCo Fondo so that no matter the category, you can compete for the same prizes and absolute podium glory. We’re so happy you are here.

  • For 2024, we'll refund or transfer to 2025 100% of your entry until April 1, 2024. From April 2, 2024 to May 15, 2024, we'll refund 50% of your entry or transfer 100% of your entry. After May 15, 2024, we are unable to refund or transfer your entry, unless it is changing categories for the current year or transferring an entry to another person. You are able to transfer your entry to another person yourself, by logging into BikeReg. If you decide to enter a category of greater distance, you'll be responsible for the additional cost. BikeReg offers additional insurance on your entry that we highly recommend if this is a concern for you. There are no refunds if you downgrade your distance.

  • If you fall within the refund period, you can request a refund (see above question for dates). You can also transfer your entry to another rider free of charge through your BikeReg account.

  • Yes, you can log into BikeReg and change which route you are signed up for. If there is a cost difference, you’ll pay when you change your entry. You must do this before registration closes and we print your number plate. There are no refunds if you downgrade your distance.

In addition to your ID, it’s best practice while riding to also have a credit card or cash, and a health insurance card.

  • Hard no.

  • Both are free of charge. Have your non-riding family members or friends join you Saturday and meet you after the Sunday ride to celebrate together!

  • There is a variety of vendors from the cycling industry and Fort Collins's wonderful small businesses. There are also several brands doing bike demos.

Do yourself a favor and know the schedule in advance!

During the ride there will be a few “party police” on e-bikes who can help with minor mechanicals and a couple motos who can do the same. They are roaming, so their help is not guaranteed. You must come self-sufficient.

Event Day: On Course

  • All routes are provided via Strava and are available in the tech guide (provided closer to event day) and on the route page. Strava is free to use and makes it easy to download the route onto your cycling computer or use from the app on your phone. Here is how to download a route on Strava without Strava Premium.

The routes will also be marked but understand that signs get removed every year and therefore they are not 100% dependable.

No cue sheets are provided as we don’t think they are very accurate. If you insist on a cue sheet, you can print from Strava.

  • Refer to the tech guide (available closer to event day) for your specific route, along with their location(s).

Here for It (12-miles): 1 Aid Station

Dare You (32-miles): 1 Aid Station + Oasis

Double Dog Dare You (60-miles): 2 Aid Stations + Oasis

Triple Dog Dare You (100-miles): 4 Aid Stations + Oasis

Quad Dog Dare You (118-miles): 5 Aid Stations + Oasis

  • Aid Stations will stock water, First Endurance hydration, and sodas like Coke. For food, each aid station will be unique and will have a variety of items like First Endurance Liquid Shot gels, bananas, pretzels, pickles, fig bars, cookies, candy, and more. Bobo’s and Bar-U-Eat will also provide some locally made treats.

If you have a very specific diet, we'd recommend packing your own nutrition products. There will also be a port-o-potty at each aid and public restroom near the Cattail Chorus aid station on the 12-mile route. All routes except the 118-mile will have ADA potties available.

Each aid station will also have a pump, very limited tool selection, and first aid kit.

  • All routes except the 12-mile Here for It Route has chip timing.

The 12-mile Here for It Route is focused on adventure, fun, and safety on the bike paths and will not have chip timing but will have number plates still.

  • All routes are on open roads and you must follow the rules of the road. You can review the Colorado Rules of the Road here. Also, no littering. Use those lovely pockets or your handlebar bag to store your wrappers until you get to an aid station or festival.

  • *Enough food and hydration to get to the next aid station.

*Things to address the most common mechanicals include items to change several flats (we like Tubolitos), a really good multi-tool, and a master link.

*Other considerations include a phone with a good battery (try airplane mode!), ID, chapstick with SPF, sunscreen, Chamois Butt'r, Tums, ibuprofen.

  • You cannot receive outside private aid at anytime during the event. Outside private aid means a special person who is there to deliver exclusive aid to you specifically, such as taking your clothes, providing you with a special bottle, etc. This includes at aid stations and in-between.

Our aid stations have plenty of water, electrolyte, snacks, and light mechanical help like pumps.

Your family and friends are welcome on course to cheer you on. Encourage them to ride there! #morebikesmorelikes Use the routes provided the week of the event to figure out a spot WITHOUT driving on course please. Extra vehicles reduce safety…period.

Should you need to abandon, please be sure your pick up person knows the course and how to be on it as little as possible.

  • Learn more about the Stop as Yield Law in Colorado here. In short, if clear, it allows cyclists to safely roll stop signs or stop and proceed at red lights.

Competitors

  • FoCo Fondo offers something for everyone. You can ride it, you can race it, go for a bolo tie time, maximum fun points, or compete in the 118 mile overall race for cash. What matters most is that you have a really really really really good time.

For those that enjoy a little competition, the timing for each route will also be separated by age group, gender (M/F/NB), and special categories like para athlete and single speed along with podiums and prizes. E-bike and tandems do not have a race category this year but are welcome to participate.

The long route will also feature a prize purse by Source Endurance for M/W riders and a matched purse for non-binary riders thanks to Fat Tire.

  • Bolo ties are awarded on the 118-mile route only. To win the coveted, handmade, FoCo Fondo bolo tie, you must finish the course by a certain time of day not ride time, total time.

Bolo Ties will be awarded as follows

    Men finishing by 1:00pm

    Women finishing by 1:45pm

    Gender Expansive by 2:00pm

    Single Speed Men by 1:45pm

    Single Speed Women by 2:30

    Gender Expansive Single Speed 3:00pm

You will be awarded your bolo tie at the finish line as you cross inside of the designated times.

  • Results are by mass start-finish, not by time on course. Everyone's start time is the same no matter when you cross the timing mat (i.e. 8am for 60-mile riders). Your finish time is when you cross the finish mat.

For example: if you do the 60-mile route, your time will start at 8am and if you cross the finish line at 12pm, your time would be 4 hours and 0 minutes.

  • Regarding cross-gender aid, we are fans of the spirit of sport, which means good ol' head-to-head competition. Let men compete against the men, women compete against the women, and non-binary/gender expansive against the non-binary/gender expansive without intentional interference. Dudes, don't give your wheel to your woman teammate or render aid that you wouldn't provide to any other rider. Women shouldn't come with a team of men to exclusively pace them, etc. It's lame AF and not in the spirit of sport. Compete head-to-head because you are already a badass athlete.

  • Riders who are currently serving or have ever served a doping violation are not welcome at FoCo Fondo. Please do not sign up and make the promoters call you out for past doping violations. We are not sympathetic to your doping scandal. You will be refunded and not allowed to start. Riders agree to follow current WADA guidelines regarding doping.

  • There are cut-off times on the 100-mile 118-mile course. Please refer to the tech guide (available closer to event day). This is to ensure your safety. It’s summer. It’s hot and there is zero water outside of the aid stations on course. We want to make sure you get back okay and have a great time.

  • Chip timing is through Red Dirt Race Management. You will receive your number plate with the chip attached at packet pickup. You must fix your number plate to the front of your bike so the number is visible and the chip can be read at the start and finish. Your number plate cannot be folded or wrapped around your head tube or the chip will not read.

You will be able to see your times via a link posted closer to event day...on event day, you are responsible for reviewing your result and if there is an error, then you need to report it to registration/timing within 20 minutes of finishing ("protest period").

The 12-mile Here for It Route will receive number plates but will not have chip timing- it's all about fun!

  • No, we’re skipping aerobars this year- sorry!

  • Yes! 2024 prize purse is $3000 5-deep for men, women, and non-binary/gender expansive ($9000 total). Thank you Source Endurance for the support with the prize purse and Fat Tire matching the non-binary purse.

    1st: $1200

    2nd: $800

    3rd: $500

    4th: $300

    5th: $200

Please review our gender category guidelines at the top of this page under Registration. We’re hoping this is a good fit and we’re always trying to do better!

  • Yes! There are age group awards on all routes except the 12-mile route. The 12- is meant to be enjoyed as is! Age breakdowns will be: <18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+ and is your age at the end of 2024.

Awards will be held at the main stage at 4:15pm. Prizes will be for Top 5 Overall and 1st place age group. Age group podiums are 3 deep.

  • Bikes are fun and let's keep it that way. In a group, skip the headphones (transparency mode is fine).

  • There will be overall awards on all routes except the 12-mile route for para and singles speed athletes. First place will receive a prize. There will not be awards for the e-bike or tandem category in 2024. Awards are at 4:15pm at the main stage.

Emergency Protocols

  • All riders should have an emergency contact to call if they need a pick-up. We are not able to provide a pick-up service for riders.

  • July is usually hot and dry. However, several times we have had afternoon storms blow through. Usually, they blow through pretty quickly. It is a rider's responsibility to be aware of the weather around them and make a call regarding their safety, whether that is to keep riding, to stop and take shelter, or to call their emergency contact.

2023 saw one of the hottest days of the year. 2022 was in the low 70s. We’ve had cloudless years and years with hail. Windy years and still years.

  • Like in Bite the Bullet, if you have a busted tooth take a bullet casing, bite down on it really hard, and it can act as a crown. You do what you have to do to survive the horse race. But really, the kids' and family routes will have volunteers and ride leaders who can help if you have an issue.

You are responsible for your (and your kids', if they are riding) safety, so do ride within your limits. If you need major medical attention or to go to the hospital, call 911 immediately. If you have a bump or scrape and want to clean up, get a bandaid, and continue, just head to the next aid station and they will have aid for you. Basic first aid supplies will be available near the registration table and at aid stations.

Please be prepared if you need technical assistance for flats or minor things. Making it to aid stations is your best bet. If you need a ride please call your emergency contact. We will also have basic aid for wound cleaning, upset stomachs, and allergies at registration.

  • FoCo Fondo is an event that takes place on open roads. The course has been designed to utilize as low-traffic roads as possible. Sunday is also an exceptionally low traffic day. We have several controlled intersections and the beginning and end of the route as you re-enter town. However, it’s essential you keep your wits about you and are very aware of your surroundings for your own safety.

In the tech guide, we have also provided some notes on some intersections that are not controlled, such as passing a higher speed road. The lists are not entirely conclusive but we think they are helpful.

All riders must be aware and operate under the Rules of the Road in Colorado at all times. If you have an emergency in relation to a driver, please call 911.

Inclusion at FoCo Fondo

  • Bikes are for the people! FoCo Fondo seeks to faciliate your journey on a bike regardless of age, race, gender, ability, body, sexual orientation, economic status, favorite color, or preferred New Belgium beer. It takes guts to show up at an event and we're psyched you are willing to share an adventure with us. We have a zero tolerance policy for harrassment. Riders or spectators failing to abide by this policy will be dismissed from FoCo Fondo, without refund or award if applicable. Bike are unifying, adventures are unifying. Let's ride.

  • This 20-rider program opened for applicants in February 2024 and has now been filled. This includes an entry and housing and partnered with Fat Tire and 1st City Cycling. Additional community members have stepped up to house additional riders! Learn more.

  • There will be podiums distinguished by age group and gender, plus an extra category for para athletes and single speed. There are overall prizes for each category (by gender, 5 deep). Age group and special category podiums are 3-deep and prizes are for the top step.

The prize purse ($9000 total) will be split equally for men, women, and non-binary/gender expansive on the long route.

  • Although riding a bike is a simple and beautiful thing, we understand that cycling is expensive and the entry may not be affordable for all. We offer a flexible Volunteer Program for riders who need this support to 1) be an important part of the FoCo Fondo, and 2) get to ride! Sign up here.

  • Safe Routes to School in Fort Collins extends way beyond teaching kids how to safely ride to school. Although we give the organization full reign on how to use these funds, typically they have primarily funded after school bike clubs at the lower economic schools in the area. Sports are so important and we love the power of the bike to provide exercise, transportation, AND adventure!

These funds have also provided things like a bike mechanic in needed neighborhoods to keep kids rolling, MTB education, helmets for kids, and teaching new immigrant kids how to bike to school with confidence. We really appreciate the thoughtful and creative use of the funds to best support those who need it most.

  • Childcare is an option at FoCo Fondo via Sunshine House CSU! Get the details and sign up here.

  • In 2023, As a part of the Shimano Leadership program, we were able to consult with local para athlete Sam Summers on best practices. If you register for the para category, we have additional questions for you so we can make sure you are getting any extra support you might need (i.e. help getting your bike out of your vehicle, special parking, etc). If you have questions, please reach out to Sam directly.

Preparation FAQs

  • Heat acclimation is an extremely important part of summer riding and events. You can also utilize techniques to avoid overheating even if you are acclimated. Watch this essential webinar from Source Endurance on how what happens to your body when it overheats, how to acclimate, and the best event-day protocols for hot weather.

  • Fort Collins sits at about 5000 feet. There is overlap between heat acclimation and altitude acclimation, so definitely make sure you are heat acclimated if possible if you are coming from a lower elevation. For the best practices, check out this webinar from Source Endurance on Preparing for High Altitude Racing and Events.

  • Learn how to design a fueling strategy for yourself based on your body and pace here. Or sign up for a Race Day Nutrition Plan from Source Endurance and they will calculate it out for you!

  • Pacing is an important strategy for a successful event day. There is a tendency to get caught up in the excitement and go out too hard. Learn how to create a pacing strategy for yourself.

  • You should 100% run tubeless tires with fresh sealant…we have goatheads out in Colorado and flatting is annoying.

We recommend the WTB Vulpine 36mm for those who want to perform and WTB Vulpine 40mm for those who want to party.

There are a few stretches of deeper gravel and B roads, but a technical rider can scoot through those with care and enjoy faster rolling overall. The course has been completed on road tires a few times but not at all recommended.
